We all possess the necessary tools needed to stand up for ourselves and what we believe to be right, but many of us choose not to use them. These tools are our voice and the freedom of speech. “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action” by Audre Lorde proves the importance of using this freedom. According to Ms. Lorde, if we remain silent, free speech will not protect us, but destroy us. Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Frederick Dougl all used the right of free speech as a means of speaking out. Had they not, the world would not be as it is today. Not speaking our minds and not standing up for what we believe in is as if we're not ourselves and allow others to take our place.
